BOTTLED SMOKE II

FESTIVAL OF HIDDEN MUSIC

About Bottled Smoke

In 2007, an exhibition called BOTTLING SMOKE was created for the Echo Curio by the Curio staff, with much assistance from Brad and Eden Rose (of Digitalis Industries), Jefre Cantu-Ledesma (of Root Strata), Michael Donnelly (of MYMWLY), Britt and Amanda Brown (of Not Not Fun) and Xela (of Type).

Attached to this exhibition of cd-rs and their impact on the music industry was a festival of experimental sound, groups and individuals who have created their own sustainable economy of music under their own rules.  That art show produced a cd series also, which was adorned by an amazing piece of angelic art by Eden Hemming Rose.  We reproduced that on the exhibit wall for one of the art pieces, along with an open call for artists to create their favorite imaginary band in whatever way possible.  The angel you see in some of the ads is a reproduction of the original, and we hope it lends good memories for the past events and a good omen for the upcoming ones.

This festival was called BOTTLED SMOKE, to imply the capturing of the spirit, if only for those three days.

Fast forward to 2010.  All of the labels have grown and blossomed, even in these tough times.  The Curio staff decided to celebrate on this anniversary with another festival (minus the exhibition) and chose to work with newer, younger labels to celebrate the richness of LA’s hidden music industry.  This go-around, we’ve asked the assistance of Britt and Amanda Brown (whose NNF label continues to blaze new trails, and mostly because we love their bands), Nate Rulli (of Abandon Ship Records, a label founded at Bottled Smoke 3 years ago), Phil and Myste (of Stunned Records, the stupifyingly amazing imprint now based in Portland), and several other smaller but no less vital local labels (DNT, URCK, and Deathbombarc).

Friday May 28th – Opening Night at Echo Curio (1519 W Sunset Blvd LA, CA 90026)

9p BACK TO THE FUTURE THE RIDE – Brian Miller of Deathbombarc and Foot Village brings us deep droning meditations using the tiniest of tunemakers.  Expect to nod off in a pleasant way…

9:30p SLAVES – … only to be awakened by PDX’s own THE SLAVES, as they bring deeper drones and spaced out angelic voices to the mix.

10p ROBEDOOR – East side tunnel dwellers emerge, riding lava flows and damaged casio squalls, atop clattering drum beats and fractured howls.

10:45p TUNNELS – long time running PDX drone project, something new and magical every time.

11:30p INCA ORE – reigning queen of floating music, Eva’s INCA ORE is ground zero of improvised ambient drone and we’re proud to have her back at the Echo Curio

12:30p POCAHAUNTED – topping off the night of bliss is the only LA band destined to make a dub plate in Jamaica, but it will then remixed by Ivo of 4AD and shot into space by NASA to prove that humanity is worth contacting after all.

Saturday May 29th – Afternoon show at Echo Curio (1519 W Sunset Blvd LA, CA 90026)

1p HEADLIGHT – Axel and his pile of cool toys are gonna lead us on an early afternoon meditation session, complete with brain stretching and smile creation.

1:30p DEAD LINE CONNECTOR – heavy power electronics from Nate Rulli, mastermind of Abandon Ship records.

2p SWANOX – creating heavy soundtracks for paint huffing and head swooning, an excellent wake up call.

2:30p QUEEN VICTORIA – this young man has a recent Stunned Record release and 7 inch on Abbadon, both of which display the range from sonic soundtrack to smoldering song.

3p DAN BROWN – one man drummer band – first man to play the Echo Curio when we opened, member of Hall of Fame

3:45p PEDESTRIAN DEPOSIT – bowing the astral cables in our hearts and minds, vibrating at the speed of the rumbling earth beneath our feet.  The sound of the universe slowing down.

4:30p RANGERS – with releases on Not Not Fun, we are eagerly anticipating our first experience with this mysterious group.

5:15p M GEDDES GENGRAS – it is hard to keep up this fine fellow, as he winds his way down dual paths of analog and digital mayhem, adding in percussion and electric guitar wizardry when necessary.  His new album on ABADDON is sickness incarnate, dark swirls in the maelstrom.

Saturday May 29th Evening show at Sync Space (4306 Melrose Blvd LA, CA 90029)

9p DREAMCOLOUR – double sax benders with deep drone back-up, equal parts challenge and relief.  One big group hug, pushing and pulling.

9:30p THE FARADAY TRIPPERS – triple theremin action, waves of oceanic bliss, punctuated by shrieks of lighting flash.

10:15p SLASHER RISK – NYC brutal improvisational sound traders, first time in LA.  Brutal and fragile at the same time.  Check out their amazing releases on Obsolete Units and Abandon Ship Records too… Hopefully they bring tons of merch.

11p BARN OWL – Those masters of dark psych drama are coming down from the Bay Area for two days of massive jamming.  We’re expecting some crazy hazy times with these tribal magisters.

11:45p TOM CARTER solo – One of the most exciting and original guitar players out there, from his work in Charlambides, to his collaborations with Robert Horton and others, to his solo work.  Every time he touches the strings, some new fantasy or montrosity springs forth.  We’re hoping for a little of both.

12:30p MAGICK ORCHIDS – LA’s completely tripped out  couple, plus a couple friends, explore rhythm and sound thru organic and electronic devices, with the most electrifying being their lightning fast brains.

Sunday May 30th Afternoon show at Sync Space (4306 Melrose Blvd LA, CA 90029)

1p JUSTIN McINTEER – Echo Curio’s own Justin brings his harmonium and his voice to the space, creating a vortex into the heavens.

1:30p MATTHEWDAVID – Dublab’s coolest dude, in our opinion, laying down a constantly shifting variety of sounds, based on found sounds and heavy manipulation

2p DEEP MAGIC – DC’s main man Alex brings us his solo meditations into the meaning of magic(k), taking us on a flume ride down a crystal river.

2:30p SEAN McCANN – Let’s hope this guy brings his stringed instruments and bows us into infinity, but basically Sean could kick a can and we’d be psyched.

3p THE DEGLET NOOR FAKIRS - Born from Hop-Frog, we have the newest desert dervishes, ready to scimitar off your freaking head with their jams.

3:45p ALPINE DECLINE – These former Mezzanine Owls are going to take your breath away with their haunting Jesus and Mary Chain death rattle.

4:30p METAL ROUGE - Soon to be bethrothed (well at least two of them), these fine folks create quite a racket, artfully balanced with a driving rhythm and a respect for the neandrathal blues.

5:15p TOM CARTER – BARN OWL COLLAB – This is going to be one for the books… Massive psychedelic battles with rainbow showers of neon blood.
Sunday May 30th Evening show at Echo Curio (1519 W Sunset Blvd LA, CA 90026)

9p SEQUINS AND SKELETONS – Mega band of Los Angeles folks, will fill the space with vibes and sights and sounds.

9:45p SUN ARAW – Hopefully the three piece version of this soaring flight of fancy will be coming out, but whatever form this psychonaut takes to support his layers of vocals, wah’d guitars and dubbed out drums, we’re a fan of!!!

10:30p WARM CLIMATE – If you haven’t heard Seth Kasselman, you’re dumb.

11:15p SASQROTCH – Doom doom doom doom sax doom doom doom

12mid OBSCURER – Dueling theremins (members of the Faraday Trippers) brutalizing the vocal tantrums and tonal treatments of the other guy from the Echo Curio
